Based on rugs found in the Persian region of Tabriz, this design is a wonderful example of Karastan artistry and craftsmanship. This type of pattern was first used in the fifteenth century as a design for embossed leather book-covers and was adapted in the sixteenth century for rug weaving. It is still one of the nine most common and recognized types of Persian design. It is has stood the test of centuries and has been copied by designers of every country the world over.
